Recent updates
Version 1.5 — A coach that knows your numbers (June 2026)
- Ask Finolio anything. The Coach now looks up your real figures before answering — category totals, budget status, a specific merchant — so the numbers are always exact, never guessed.
- Find any purchase from search. Expenses are indexed on-device into Spotlight, so "Whole Foods $42 March" surfaces straight from the home screen — and the Coach can pull up specific charges when you ask.
- Optional Deep analysis with Claude. Turn it on in Settings → AI (with your own Anthropic key) and mark a question "Deep" to get multi-step reasoning and current context — like whether a subscription's price is normal. Off by default; quick questions always stay on-device.
- Sharper extraction. Typed quick-add and receipt scanning now use structured on-device generation, so amounts, dates, and merchants land in the right fields far more reliably.
- Private by default. Everything works on-device with no key. Nothing leaves your phone unless you explicitly opt into a cloud path.
Version 1.4 — Your charges, logged for you (June 2026)
- Apple Card syncs itself. Connect Apple Card once and every charge — taps, online orders, subscriptions — flows in automatically from Wallet. No third-party services touch your data.
- Tap to pay, logged instantly. A new Shortcuts automation logs any Apple Pay tap, on any card, before you've put your phone away. Set it up once in Settings → Auto-Import.
- Bank alerts become expenses. Turn on your bank's transaction emails and Finolio reads just those alerts from your own Gmail — parsed on-device, read-only, nothing leaves your phone.
- Backfill months of history. Import any bank's CSV statement and Finolio detects the columns automatically. Re-importing the same file never creates duplicates.
- One charge, logged once. A smart dedupe engine recognizes the same purchase arriving from a tap, an email, and a card sync, and keeps exactly one copy.
- Per-card payment methods. Auto-imported charges are filed under the actual card — so spending breakdowns by card finally tell the whole story.
Version 1.3 — Ten little things that add up (June 2026)
- Undo delete. Every expense delete shows an Undo banner for a few seconds — receipt, tags, and notes all come back exactly as they were.
- Repeat your last expense. Long-press the + button to instantly log a copy of your most recent expense at today's date.
- Drafts that survive. Back out of the Add Expense form halfway through and your typed fields are waiting for you next time.
- Bulk select in Expenses. Long-press any row to multi-select and delete or recategorize in one go.
- Search inside Settings. A search bar at the top of Settings jumps straight to the right panel.
- Sync status chip. A small "Synced X ago" chip on the dashboard and in Settings tells you exactly how fresh the iCloud picture is. Tap to nudge a refresh.
- Why this category? Tap the info dot in the Add Expense flow to see which rule picked the suggested category.
- Today vs. yesterday on the Dashboard. A one-liner under the hero card shows today's total next to yesterday's and your 7-day average.
- Empty states that point somewhere. Every empty list now has a clear next step — "Add your first goal", "Set up a budget", "Import recurring bills".
- Set up next month in one tap. On the first of every month, Finolio offers to carry over your budgets, sprints, and goals from the previous month.
Version 1.2 — May 2026
- Cash-register amount entry. Type only digits and the decimal places itself two from the right ("1250" becomes 12.50). Type your own separator and the field gets out of the way.
- Inline receipt preview. Receipts appear directly inside the expense detail. Tap to enlarge; the section quietly hides while iCloud is still downloading.
- "Synced X min ago" indicator. A live relative-time badge on the dashboard and in Settings shows how fresh the iCloud picture is.
- Ask Siri about your spending. New App Intents answer category, biggest-expense, and top-merchant questions without launching the app, and appear in the Shortcuts gallery.
- Help section in Settings. Tips & Tour, Replay Intro Animation, Contact Support (pre-filled with your build and OS), and Rate Finolio in one place.
Version 1.1 and earlier — May 2026
Initial public release plus its first follow-up. Expenses, budgets, recurring charges, savings goals, spending sprints, receipt photos with on-device OCR, private iCloud sync, widgets, Lock Screen access, and an Apple Watch app.
Frequently asked questions
My data isn't syncing across my devices
Finolio sync is powered by your iCloud account. If a device isn't syncing, work through this list in order:
- Confirm both devices are signed into the same Apple ID under Settings → [Your Name].
- Confirm iCloud Drive is on, and that Finolio is enabled under Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → See All.
- Make sure the device has an active internet connection.
- In Finolio, open Settings → Force CloudKit Re-Sync on the device that's behind. Initial sync after a fresh install can take a few minutes.
- If you see an "iCloud not available" banner inside the app, sign back into iCloud from iOS Settings, then reopen Finolio.
If sync still hasn't completed after 10 minutes on a stable connection, email us with the version number and a description of which records aren't appearing.
Where is my data stored? Can you see it?
Your data is stored on your device and, if you have iCloud sync on, in your private CloudKit database — a sandbox that belongs to your Apple ID. We do not run any servers, and we cannot read, query, or recover your data. Even Apple cannot read CloudKit records without breaking their own at-rest encryption.
For full detail, see the Privacy Policy.
Does the Finolio Coach send my data anywhere?
By default, no. The Coach runs on your device using Apple Intelligence and answers from your own data — nothing leaves your phone. It can also search an on-device index of your expenses to pull up specific purchases, which stays local too.
A cloud option is strictly opt-in. If you turn on Deep analysis in Settings → AI (which needs your own Anthropic API key) and mark a question "Deep," only the spending figures relevant to that question — not your full history — are sent to Claude through Apple's Foundation Models framework, under your own key and Anthropic's privacy policy. Quick questions always stay on-device, and removing the key or the toggle disables the cloud path entirely. See the Privacy Policy for detail.
How do I delete all my data?
Inside Finolio, go to Settings → Delete All Data and confirm. The app removes every expense, income record, budget, savings goal, recurring item, spending sprint, and receipt file from both your device and your iCloud database.
For a defense-in-depth wipe, also go to iOS Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Finolio and tap Delete Data from iCloud.
Can I export a backup of my expenses?
Yes. Go to Settings → Export Full Backup. Finolio writes a JSON file containing every record to the app's Documents folder. You'll see it in the Files app under On My iPhone → Finolio → Backups. From there you can AirDrop it, save it to iCloud Drive, or move it anywhere else.
The export contains your full financial history in plain text — treat it like you would any sensitive document.
What is "Smart Scan" and is it private?
Smart Scan reads a receipt photo and pre-fills an expense for you. It has two paths:
- On-device (default). Uses Apple Intelligence with Vision OCR. The image and extracted text never leave your device.
- Cloud (opt-in only). If you add your own Anthropic or xAI API key under Settings → AI Keys, you may tap "Use Cloud Smart Scan" to send the image to that provider directly under your own account. Finolio is not in the middle of that request and never sees the contents.
If you don't enter a key, no third-party AI calls are made. Removing the key from settings turns the cloud path off.
How does Auto-Import work, and is it private?
Auto-Import is optional and stays off until you enable it in Settings → Auto-Import. It can pull transactions in from a few sources, and every one of them is processed on your device:
- Apple Card — read on-device with your permission through Apple's FinanceKit.
- Bank email alerts — a read-only Gmail connection that only fetches your bank's transaction-alert emails and parses them on your device.
- Apple Pay — an optional Shortcuts automation that logs a charge when you tap to pay, running entirely on your device.
- CSV statements — files you import are read locally and never uploaded.
Nothing is sent to a Finolio server — we don't run one. You can disconnect any source at any time, which removes its stored tokens from your device's Keychain. Full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
I'm not seeing the AI section in Settings
The Apple Intelligence toggle only appears on devices that support on-device foundation models — that means an iPhone 15 Pro or later, or an iPad / Mac with Apple Silicon, running iOS 18 / macOS 15 or newer with Apple Intelligence enabled in iOS Settings. On older devices, only the cloud-key path is available, and you'll still see the AI Keys section.
How do widgets and the Lock Screen work?
Add a widget by long-pressing your Home Screen or Lock Screen, tapping +, and searching for Finolio. Available widgets include the at-a-glance Today Spend, the Budget Ring, and the Quick-Add tile. Widgets refresh whenever you add an expense or when iOS budgets background time to do so.
I lost my AI API key. Can you recover it?
No. AI keys are stored in your device's iOS Keychain, which is not synced to us and not visible to anyone else. If you switch to a new device, or restore from a backup that didn't include the Keychain, you'll need to re-enter your key from your provider's dashboard.
My receipt photos aren't appearing on my other device
Receipt images travel through iCloud Drive separately from expense records. They typically appear within a few minutes, but a slow or blocked connection can delay them. Make sure iCloud Drive is enabled and Finolio is allowed under Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → See All. If the issue persists for more than 24 hours, email us.
Will Finolio ever show ads or charge a subscription?
Finolio will never show ads — we have no ad SDK, no analytics, and no business model that involves selling your attention. Finolio is a one-time App Store purchase that unlocks every Apple device on your Apple ID, and ongoing updates are free.
How do I request a refund?
Refunds for App Store purchases are handled directly by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the Finolio purchase, and follow the prompts. If Apple denies the request and you believe it was made in error, email us and we'll do what we can.
I think I found a bug. How do I report it?
Please email support@finolioapp.com with:
- What you were trying to do
- What happened instead
- Your device model, OS version, and the Finolio version (in Settings → About)
- A screenshot or screen recording, if you can grab one
The more specific the report, the faster we can fix it. Thank you for taking the time.
System status
Finolio relies on Apple's iCloud and CloudKit services for sync. If those are degraded, Finolio sync will be too. You can check Apple's live status at apple.com/support/systemstatus.
